….. kinda.
After 12 hours sleep, a bit of breakfast and then another brief snooze, it was time to get back into it. One of the best bits about traveling is street food. Walking through the commercial district Downtown, I saw a huge line up at a pretty grotty looking Taco Van. Always a good sign. I had the most awesome chicken taco with avocado, chilli and lime. It was one of the nicest things I’ve ever eaten! Nearly went back for another but, nope – so much more to try. Think I’ll be grazing all day!!
As the blog title says, I was back on 2 wheels, in a fashion. Vancouver’s pretty flat, so hired a pushy for the afternoon and spent it in Stanley Park. It’s 400 ha of bike and walking tracks right on the bay. There were lots of others doing the same and the whole area had a nice vibe. Everyone was relaxed and enjoying the colours, the sun and the outdoors. Lots to see and no rush.
The seaplanes heading to Vancouver Island were pretty cool too. The bike tracks wend their way all through the city, so spent the afternoon exploring. It’s pretty fast and a great way to get around, although the Vancouver drivers have a pretty poor reputation, even worse than Toowoomba’s! They don’t believe in indicating and seem to change lanes without looking. You can also turn right at a red light – go figure. Starting to watch everything pretty closely in anticipation of having to tackle it myself shortly
My ‘real’ bike should arrive at 7.00 am tomorrow morning. I understand it will need between 4 and 6 hours to get through the customs process and be unpacked (I hope). Then the fun begins. There was a bit of a drama fitting it into the usual wooden crate the freight forwarder typically uses, so it ended up in a metal frame and wrapped in plastic. I’ll need to put the front wheel back on, re-attach the soft bags and then tackle the self clearance. It should be a straightforward process and easier than the last time I did it in Kuala Lumpur (not that it didn’t go well there). Expect it will be simpler in an English speaking country though.
Dinner was prawn and chorizo tapas followed by crispy, juicy dry ribs. All washed down with a Goose Island India Pale Ale. Life could be a whole lot worse. Cheers
Sounds great Dave. You have a nice easy going writing style. Great pics too. You must feel like quite the tourist snapping away at the local scenes.Looking fwd to more. Julia and I are about three months behind you but will be doing it all in LA.
